Site design

Some might be wondering who put this cool website together. The answer is: I did! In fact, I’ve built a few websites recently. For example, I created a site for Mark Russell (author of Lessons in Lightness) and one also for Mustang Alley Horse Rescue. I actually rather enjoy this work and so I continue to accept these projects as they come up.

All of these sites were created using WordPress which I love. It is a wonderfully flexible platform which allows me to incorporate some very cool technologies into my sites without me needing to be a programmer (which I am not). For many years I worked in the technology sector. I did software support for several years and eventually moved into a business analyst position with a small web application development firm. All of these jobs required that I be able to help people actually use the technology to serve their business requirements. I was just technical enough to talk to the developer and business savvy enough to talk to the customer. So, I frequently was in the position of bridging the communications gap between the two.

I’m still ‘bridging the gap’ only now I’m helping bridge the communications gap between people and their horses! The old skills continue to serve me.

Aside from its flexibility the other thing I really like about WordPress is how it makes it so easy for non-technical people to develop and post their own content. The problem with most websites is that they are static. In order to be really effective our site needs to be continuously evolving with new content. This will draw more people into your world. But, who wants to pay a web designer to constantly update the site with new content pages? What a pain and so costly! With WordPress you use a simple word processing-like interface in your browser to add new content yourself. Very cool! That means once the site is set up you can carry on with just the part you know well… your content.
