Recently this issue came up on the Clickryder group. What to do when you are walking your horse and he just dives for the grass without any thought of you. No amount of clicker training for leading nicely seems to keep the horse from running to the grass when he sees it. I answered it there and I thought it was a good one to keep. I added a few more thoughts here. To me, this is a great example of needing to live and train in the Real World where there are all manner of reinforcers [more...]  It isn’t unusual for me to work with a client’s horse and find that I just don’t have the problems she is having. Part of it is that I come in with some better timing and clarity. But part of it is the fact that I am NEW and don’t have a long history established with the horse. So it is relatively ‘easy’ for me to make what appears to be a remarkable change. But it only works for me. Now the owner can come in and do the ’same’ thing and it doesn’t work for her. [more...] Having been to numerous shows and clinics I am often struck by how willing people are to put up with problems (like tension, resistance, taking off, bucking) with their horse as if there is nothing that can be done about them. I really do think that the reason this happens is because people simply aren’t even aware that things could or should be better.
